Archaeological Museum of Lefkada
Nestled in the Cultural Centre of Lefkada Town since its establishment in 1999, the Archaeological Museum of Lefkada invites visitors to journey through the island’s ancient past. Across four thoughtfully curated halls, guests can explore artifacts from the Paleolithic era to Roman times, including tools, pottery, coins, jewelry, and funerary objects uncovered at sites like Nirikos, Nydri, and Fryni. A dedicated gallery honors the work of German archaeologist Wilhelm Dörpfeld, whose groundbreaking discoveries helped tie Lefkada to Homeric traditions. A must-visit for history enthusiasts, the museum offers an intimate, immersive dive into Lefkada’s cultural heritage.
Agia Mavra Fort
Standing guard at the entrance of Lefkada, Agia Mavra Castle is a striking medieval fortress that has witnessed centuries of history. Built around 1300 by Giovanni Orsini to protect the island from pirates, the castle evolved under various rulers, including the Ottomans and Venetians, each leaving their architectural mark. The name "Agia Mavra" (Santa Maura) originates from a chapel within the fortress dedicated to the saint, and for a time, the entire island was known by this name. Today, visitors can explore its well-preserved walls, visit the museum and enjoy panoramic views of the Ionian Sea. Agia Mavra Castle offers a captivating journey through Lefkada's rich and diverse past.
Former NATO Base
Perched at nearly 900 m on Agios Donatos plateau above Englouvi, the former Lefkada NATO radar base (officially “Radar Station 486L MEDCOM”) was constructed between 1962 and 1965 by the U.S. Air Force to relay strategic communications across the Mediterranean during the Cold War. Today, its skeletal infrastructure, looming dishes, and panoramic vantage point attract urban explorers and photographers intrigued by its ghostly ambiance, strong winds, and views spanning across Lefkada’s rugged terrain. Even though it is not allowed to enter, it is worth visiting to see from outside and enjoying the sea views.
